A New Year’s (Dementia) Resolution

“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago; the next best time is today.” You’ve likely heard this pithy Chinese proverb before, but it stokes some regret, wouldn’t you say?

Let’s try a more positive, forward-thinking version: “I’m going to plant a tree today so when I read that proverb in 20 years, I’ll be like, ‘Oh yeah, nailed it!’”

Feel the difference?  The original has a tablespoon of shame and cup of chores. The second version is just joy in ownership, garnished with some spunk. Which do you prefer?

There are several parallels with dementia. Dementia can be a 20-year journey. Caregiving can feel like a heavy chore. “I need the shade of relief!” “I miss harvesting the fruit of a healthy relationship.” “The beauty is gone.” “My back yard—or my heart—feels so bleak, empty.” Each year that passes makes me regret all the more not getting support earlier. But there are solutions I can put in place today. I have choices.

Did you know the Dementia Institute has mature ‘trees’ in-stock that can give you some shade and fruit already this week? A one-hour personal consultation with a dementia specialist is one of them… and a fantastic place to start: it’s free in 2026*.

In this season of gift-giving, family get-togethers, and New Year’s resolutions, there’s no better time to make arrangements to plant your tree… and find your dementia solutions. Just think about how rewarding it’ll be when, in 2 months or 20 years, you’ll look back, without regrets, and know you did the right thing for yourself and your loved ones.

“Oh yeah, nailed it!”

*  Thanks to a generous grant from the Michigan Health Endowment Fund, a Personal Consultation, Family & Friends Course, and Dementia Journey simulation are all free for caregivers, loved ones, and visitors. Supply is limited, so register today!
